For children with autism that have more intensive needs, self-contained classes are offered at the preschool, elementary and secondary level. Methodology within these self-contained classes would be driven by each child’s individualized needs and could include a variety of techniques which have demonstrated proven effectiveness for children with autism (e.g. Structured Teaching, Applied Behavior Analysis, Sensory Integration, and Picture Exchange Communication System, etc. 

Students in this class are working on developing skills in a variety of areas. Functional academics are a focus in the classroom. Small group or one-on-one learning sessions are utilized to address communication goals. Needs regarding sensory diets, visual systems, social stories, and environmental manipulation are addressed in the SPICE classroom. Opportunities are utilized to bring in peers from the general education setting to participate in shared learning activities.

About Ms. Mecham

Ms. Mecham received her bachelor’s and her two master’s degrees at from the University of Phoenix. Her degrees are in business, special education, and psychology. Ms. Mecham has been teaching for nine years and those years have all been working with students that have special needs. She became a teacher because of the lack of good teachers and programming for students that have special needs. This links back to seeing her brother grow up in an education system that was not looking out for him and his needs.

Ms. Mecham likes to do photography, read, watch old movies, and cross-stitch. When she has the free time. Ms. Mecham also enjoys hiking, seeing national parks, historical sites, and an occasional theme park, especially Disneyland. Ms. Mecham loves history and continues to learn all she can about different cultures. Ms. Mecham enjoys art and enjoys learning about the history of art. She would love to travel to Europe and visit castles, art museums, and other historical landmarks. Ms. Mecham enjoys her hobbies and teaching children.
