Advancement via Individual Determiniation

What is AVID?

AVID, Advancement via Individual Determination, is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the achievement gap by preparing all students for college and other postsecondary opportunities.  Established more than 30 years ago with one teacher in one classroom, AVID today impacts more than 800,000 students in 44 states and 16 countries/territories.

The AVID Elective class targets students in the academic middle, who have the desire to go to college and are capable of completing rigorous curriculum using the will to work hard.  Typically, AVID Elective students will be the first in their families to attend college, and many are from low-income or minority families.  In the AVID Elective, students are routinely required to enroll in their school’s toughest courses, such as Honors or Advanced Placement classes.

The AVID Elective teacher becomes more than just a teacher to his/her AVID Students.  Students stay with their AVID teacher for all four years, so the AVID teacher becomes a mentor, advisor, and an aide to parents by monitoring grades, tutoring, and providing support.

What do students do in the AVID Elective class?

AVID Secondary starts with an elective class for one period a day, where students learn organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking and asking probing questions, get academic help from peers and tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make college seem attainable.  Driven by the WICOR method (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, an Reading) and based on rigorous standards, AVID’s curriculum supports high levels of academic achievement for all students and aligns to state and national content standards.

Yearly Themes:
Freshman Year – Self Awareness and Global Awareness
Sophomore Year – College, Careers and Community
Junior Year – Test Prep and College Success Skills
Senior Year – College, Scholarships and Leadership Skills

How do I get involved with AVID?

If you are interested in becoming part of the AVID Family, we would love to hear from you!  Please stop by and see Mrs. Fortney’s (Room 2219) to pick up an application.  Once your application has been processed, you will be notified.  At that time, you will meet with your counselor to add the AVID Elective to your schedule.  Make sure that you also have at least one Honors or AP course in your schedule.  If you have questions, visit the AVID website or email Mrs. Fortney at Stefanie.Fortney@gilbertschools.net

What do former students have to say about AVID?

“I think the most helpful aspect was the public speaking skills we learned. The speaking practice and skill development helped me become the public speaker I am today.  I am not shy to go in front of a big crowd to speak, and instead I am often the first one to volunteer to say something!”
- Student, Class of 2016

“AVID is one of the big factors in my life that shaped me into the person I am today.  I was given a family, complete with a teacher who took on the role of my ‘school mom,’ classmates who acted as my brothers and sisters, and a lot of love and support… I am so thankful for the bonds that were created and the opportunities that I was given.”
- Student, Class of 2016

“I’m grateful for the people I spent that last four years of high school with… for teachers who made the impossible possible.  I can’t wait to see what we all do in the future, because there is no doubt that we will all achieve greatness and make the world a better place.”
- Student, Class of 2016
